Buyer’s Guide

Electric chainsaws are all but simple. As such, you are going to need a buyer’s guide if this is your first model. As a matter of fact, due to the new models and the overall complexity, you are going to need this guide even if you are looking for your tenth unit. So, what are the main factors which must be taken into consideration?

1. Power

Power is the first and the main factor to consider. The electric chainsaws come with different powers. The entry-level models have 5-6 Amps which may be insufficient for most of you. Average models have up to 15Amps and the most powerful can have up to 30 Amps. This matter can’t be generalized.

The bottom line is that you need a powered electric chainsaw unless you are going to use it for trimming trees only. Power is definitely the most important factor and more is always merrier.

2. Bar Length

Bar length will range between 10 and 20 inches. It must be proportionally with the electric motor! It means that more powerful saw will have a longer bar and underpowered will have a shorter bar. Fitting a long bar on an electric saw with a low power won’t be a wise thing to do.

But, how you can deduce which bar length you actually need? Simply actually. The bar must be at least 2 inches longer than the diameter of the wood you are planning to cut. We always recommend longer bars simply due to the fact they are useful in more cases and they are effective when shorter bars aren’t.

3. Weight

Obviously, power and the bars are important factors and more power with a longer bar is preferable. But, this also adds weight, so you will have to cope with that weight.

More weight will be an issue if you are planning to use the saw for a longer period of time. If not, then it is irrelevant. The weight will range between 8 and 20 pounds.

4. Corded or Cordless

As you were able to see, we tested and reviewed corded and cordless electric saws. There are pros and cons of each type.

Corded electric chainsaws are simpler to use and there is no need to carry or recharge the battery. But, they range are limited by the power source and the power cord!

Cordless can be used anywhere you want, but they have a limited cutting duration and sooner or later, you will have to replace the battery.

It is easy to make a difference if you know where and how long you are planning to use an electric saw. If you are planning to cut in your backyard only, you should go for the corded electric chainsaw. If you are planning to use it in the cabin in the woods, get a cordless version.
