9 Key Features of The Pit Boss Kamado Grill

Pit Boss 71220 Kamado BBQ Ceramic Grill review

1) Sizing and Cooking Area

The Pit Boss Kamado measures 45.9 x 29.1 x 52 inches and weighs just under 179 pounds. It's kind of heavy due to its sturdiness. Despite coming with four wheels for portability, you might need help to move it around, especially on a soft ground.

The cooking area is impressive for this size though – 567 square inches. There is also a 2 tier cooking surface. It's more than enough for about 20 hot dogs or 5 whole chickens. Given the dual cooking area, you can prepare more foods at the same time – vegetables on one side and meat on the other.

2) Efficiency and Versatility

The 2 tier surface is by far the main reason why the Pit Boss Kamado is so popular. It's all about versatility. Both grates are made from stainless steel and they're also very easy to clean.

The lower grate is fixed and cannot be moved. The upper one is removable. It depends on the type of food you're cooking. If you prepare some whole chickens and can't fit them on one tier only, just remove the upper one and add to the available height.

3) Build and Durability

The Pit Boss grill is designed to last for ages. The stainless steel grates will never fade and will maintain their efficiency overtime.

However, what catches our attention the most is its thick ceramic build. The walls are thick and entirely made from ceramic. Therefore, not only will it be super durable, it can also manage to maintain temperature at optimal standards with no fluctuations.

The heat is radiated evenly onto the food, while moisture is literally locked in for a more intense aroma. Ceramic is not all about quality and durability though, it also looks good and professional. The grill will definitely make a statement in your backyard.

4) Multiple Cooking Options

The Pit Boss blue ceramic grill comes with a cast iron calibrated damper. This makes the grilling extremely accurate, ensuring good results on your meal. It's easy to use, even if it is the first time using an outdoor grill cooker.

Apart from grilling, you can also slow smoke foods, bake pies or pizzas or sear steaks. Your cooking options are so diversified that the cooker is likely to become your primary choice for most of your meals. If you are looking for other types of grills, click here.

5) Portability and Compactness

Most users appreciate the portability of this grill. Rainy day? Just move it under a shelter. Too sunny? Move it in the shade. It features four caster wheels that make transportation a breeze.

However, the center of gravity is quite high, so you'll have to be careful while moving it. Pulling is more efficient than pushing. Given its weight, you might need some help.

In terms of compactness, it features 2 side shelves. They're made from bamboo – classic and durable. They fold down when not in use. When in use, you can store plates, raw meats or utensils for more convenience. They're easy to clean as well. Given the wooden construction, you should clean them as soon as you're done cooking.

6) Operation and Fuel

Pit Boss has managed to make charcoal grilling a breeze. Normally, charcoal releases lots of smoke. While it gives food a unique aroma, it can also become annoying for your guests and "the chef" obviously.

However, given the heavy ceramic body and enclosed design of the pit boss Kamado, this problem is resolved. It traps everything inside, while smoke is gradually released in an efficient way. It makes no difference how much food you actually prepare; your yard and the neighborhood will only experience the unique aroma of meat – no aggressive smoke or smells.

7) Temperature Control and Efficiency

Temperature control is quite an innovation in outdoor grill cookers. You're more likely to have such features in indoor products. However, the enclosed design makes it easy to maintain the desired temperature outdoors as well.

The grill features a large and intuitive thermometer close to the damper. You just need to set the temperature and thats it. You can now cook food without being stuck next to the grill in order to flip it over every few minutes.

8) Ease of Use

Despite the heavy profile of the lid, it has springs for easy opening. It also features heavy duty hardware, as well as a wooden handle. The handle is less likely to get hot, so you can safely use it.

If you try to put the lid down, you do not have to worry about the lid slamming too hard on the grill cooker as it comes with a shock absorber for extra protection, not to mention, fireproof felt edge around it as well. Simply put, even a child can open and close the lid easily.

9) Storage and Maintenance

The Pit Boss grill cooker is more compact than other similar units in this segment, so it doesn't provide too much of a storage. You'll have to store charcoal or tools separately and not within the actual unit. However, the compact size makes it easy to move around and store when not in use.

In terms of maintenance, there is not much to focus on. Clean the grills, lid and side shelves. Some parts can be removed for easier cleaning. Generally speaking, the earlier you clean after every use, the easier it is (applies to all grills). Otherwise, grease might harden and become stubborn to remove. For cleaning, you only need the basics:- a mild soap and a sponge.
